Daily operation guide for pilots and general users ― focusing on status checks, IGC log retrieval, Wi-Fi connection, and software updates

The PowerFLARM Flex can be configured and maintained from the browser of a smartphone, tablet, or PC using its built-in Wi-Fi access point. This browser screen is the FLARM Hub (referred to as the "WebGUI" in this manual). No cables or app installation are required, so pre- and post-flight checks and IGC log retrieval can be completed on the spot.
How to Connect
- Turn on the aircraft's power and start the PowerFLARM Flex (the Wi-Fi comes up about 30 seconds after startup).
- In the Wi-Fi settings of your smartphone/PC, connect to the network named
FLAFLX10W-xxxxxx. The password is printed on the sticker on the unit. If you scan the QR code on the sticker, you can skip entering the SSID and password. - Enter
10.10.10.10in your browser's address bar. The FLARM Hub screen will open.
CommonCommon screen layoutCommon layout
Every screen has a fixed menu on the left and content on the right. The menu is divided into four groups.

Chapter 1Status ― StatusStatus
This is the first screen shown when you open the WebGUI. It is positioned as the screen you must check before every flight, and it is divided into six cards.
FLARM card (operating state)

System card (device information)
- Firmware Version / Expiration Date: The version and expiration date of the unit's software. FLARM has an expiration date set for standard updates, and once it expires, transmission and reception stop. Be sure to update it before the date (Chapter 5).
- FLARM Hub Version: The version of this web screen itself.
- Device ID: The device serial (e.g.
FLAFLX10W-xxxxxx). Needed when contacting support. - Radio ID: Your own aircraft ID over the FLARM radio. If
(ICAO)is shown alongside it, this means the ICAO 24-bit address is in use. Use this value when registering the aircraft with external services such as OGN. - Aircraft Type: The aircraft type you set (Chapter 2).
- IGC Serial: The 3-character logger serial used in the IGC file name.
- Features: Installed licenses/functions. Items such as
ENL(Engine Noise Level) andTISare displayed.
Power card (power supply)
Displays the built-in battery level (State of Charge), unit temperature, power source (Battery / External), and external voltage. When External Voltage is 0.0 V, no external power is coming in. When using in-aircraft wiring, confirm before takeoff that this shows the aircraft voltage (e.g. 12–14 V). If the temperature is high, avoid direct sunlight.
Time & Location card (time and position)
Displays the UTC time, current position (in degrees and minutes), GPS altitude, barometric altitude, and the number of received satellites. If GPS Satellites is 5 or more and the position is plausible, positioning is good. If barometric altitude is displayed, the built-in pressure sensor is also normal.
Obstacle Database card
The state of the obstacle database. Not present means it is not installed. For the installation method, see Chapter 6.
Wi-Fi card
The QR code for connecting, the SSID, the password (toggle display with the eye icon), and the device's IP address (default 10.10.10.10). When you want a passenger or maintenance person to connect, showing them this QR is the quickest way.
Chapter 2Configuration > FLARM ― Unit SettingsConfiguration / FLARM
This screen determines all the internal settings of the PowerFLARM Flex. There are many items, so checking "Show advanced configuration items" at the top of the screen will display the detailed items as well (this manual shows the state with the checkbox ON). Detailed items are displayed enclosed in a gray band, and are marked in this manual with Advanced.
2-1. General
- Meaning
- Tells FLARM what type of aircraft your own is. It is used to assume flight characteristics (turn radius, climb rate, speed range) and forms the foundation of the warning algorithm. It is also reflected in the display icons for other aircraft.
- Options
- Aircraft with reciprocating engine(s) / Aircraft with jet/turboprop engine(s) / Helicopter/Rotorcraft / Drop plane for skydivers / Tow plane / Glider/Motor glider / Skydiver / Hang glider (hard) / Paraglider (soft) / Hot air balloon / Airship / UAV/drone / Static object
- Recommended value
- Glider/Motor glider (for sailplanes). If installed on a tow plane, use Tow plane.
- Notes
- If unset (
---), a warning appears. This is the very first item to fix after moving the unit to another aircraft.
- Meaning
- Tells whether a transponder is installed on the same aircraft. If one is installed, this is used to avoid mistaking your own transponder's response for "another aircraft."
- Options
- No transponder installed / Mode-C / Mode-S
- Recommended value
- As installed. For a Mode-S aircraft, Mode-S.
- Notes
- If you select Mode-S, setting the ICAO 24-bit address is mandatory (an error is displayed if unset). Getting this wrong can cause false warnings from your own aircraft's responses.
- Meaning
- The type of your own aircraft ID that FLARM transmits over the radio.
- Options
- FLARM (device-specific FLARM ID) / ICAO (ICAO 24-bit address issued by the aviation authority) / Random (random each time = untraceable)
- Recommended value
- For aircraft with a Mode-S transponder, ICAO. If the transponder is not installed but the aircraft is registered with OGN etc., also fix it to ICAO or FLARM.
- Notes
- Setting Random makes your aircraft unidentifiable in OGN aircraft registration, live tracking, and competition logger verification. Use it only for privacy purposes. If you change the ID, you must also update the OGN registration.
- Meaning
- A unique 24-bit address that the aviation authority (in Japan, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) issues to the aircraft. Expressed as 6 hexadecimal digits.
- Options
- 6 characters from 0-9 and a-f (e.g.
84xxxx= the band for Japanese-registered aircraft) - Recommended value
- Enter exactly the value stated on the aircraft's airworthiness certificate / radio station license.
- Notes
- Mandatory for Mode-S aircraft. Make it match exactly the value set on the transponder. A single character off can cause your own aircraft to be warned about as another aircraft.
2-2. Aircraft Information
The information entered here is carried on the FLARM radio and transmitted to surrounding aircraft and OGN receiving stations (when Automatic exchange, described later, is On). It is also used in the header of IGC logs.
- Meaning
- The aircraft's registration (for Japanese-registered aircraft,
JAxxxx). Up to 15 single-byte alphanumeric characters. - Options
- Up to 15 ASCII characters

- Enter the registration without a hyphen (e.g.
JA01XX). - Notes
- Full-width characters cannot be used.
- Meaning
- The name of the aircraft model (e.g.
LS8-s-18,ASK21). Up to 31 ASCII characters. - Options

- The manufacturer's official model designation. In competition, distinguishing span variants makes identification easier.
- Notes
- Recorded in the IGC log header and referenced when submitting for competition.
- Meaning
- The pilot's name. Up to 47 ASCII characters.

- Recommended value
- Surname and given name in Roman letters (e.g.
YAMADA Taro). - Notes
- For club aircraft and other cases where the occupant changes, the correct practice is to rewrite this before flying (it becomes the Pilot field of the IGC log).
- Meaning
- The aircraft's identification code (1-3 characters written on the tail). Displayed on other aircraft's FLARM displays.
- Options
- Up to 15 ASCII characters (in practice 1-3 characters)
- Recommended value
- The same string as written on the tail.
- Notes
- It works even if left blank, but entering it makes visual identification and calling from other aircraft easier.
- Meaning
- A function (MSG function) that automatically exchanges the registration, model, comp ID, etc. with surrounding aircraft over the FLARM radio.
- Options
- Off / On
- Recommended value
- If you have a license, On.
- Notes
- When
MSG license is not present - only periodic messages are available.is displayed as with this unit, this function requires a separate license, and even if selected, only periodic messages will be available.
2-3. Data Port
Determines the format of data sent from the unit's RJ45 connector to external equipment (flight computer, PDA, display). The principle is to match the manual of the equipment you connect.
- Meaning
- Selects the type of NMEA sentences sent to the port.
- Options
- None / Navigation and FLARM (GPS navigation sentences + FLARM sentences) / Navigation only / FLARM only / Garmin TIS / GDL 90
- Recommended value
- For common glider flight computers (LX, Oudie, XCSoar, etc.), Navigation and FLARM.
- Notes
- Garmin TIS / GDL 90 are dedicated to specific equipment. Before selecting, check the help (? icon) and the specifications of the connected equipment.
- Meaning
- The version of the FLARM data protocol. Newer versions carry more information.
- Options
- Version 3 / 4 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9
- Recommended value
- If your connected equipment supports it, the latest (Version 9).
- Notes
- Older external equipment cannot interpret newer versions and may stop displaying traffic. If nothing is displayed, lower the version and try again.
- Meaning
- The serial communication speed (bps).
- Options
- 4800 / 9600 / 19200 / 28800 / 38400 / 57600 / 115200 / 230400
- Recommended value
- 57600 (the default for most glider equipment). If the volume of information is large, 115200.
- Notes
- If the speeds on both sides do not match, no communication is possible at all. After changing it, be sure to match the external equipment side as well. Increasing the information volume while keeping a low speed will cause data loss.
2-4. FLARM Traffic Advanced
Determines the range for receiving and warning via FLARM radio, and the level of disclosure of your own aircraft's information.
- Meaning
- Aircraft farther than this distance are excluded from display and warnings (they are still received).
- Options
- 1.5 NM/3 km / 3 NM/6 km / 5 NM/9 km / 7 NM/13 km / 10 NM/19 km / 15 NM/28 km / 20 NM/37 km / Unlimited / Custom
- Recommended value
- Unlimited. Since sailplanes close on each other quickly, being able to detect them from afar is safer.
- Notes
- Narrow it only when the external display becomes cluttered in crowded competitions, etc. Narrowing it here also removes them from the Traffic Monitor.
- Meaning
- Excludes aircraft that are above or below your own altitude beyond this range.
- Options
- 1600 ft/500 m / 2000 ft/600 m / 3000 ft/900 m / 4500 ft/1400 m / 6500 ft/2000 m / Custom
- Recommended value
- 6500 ft / 2000 m (default).
- Notes
- Narrowing it hides aircraft passing overhead. If you want to detect aircraft with large altitude differences within a thermal, set it wider instead.
- Meaning
- When ON, your own aircraft's position information is transmitted to other aircraft only in a "thinned-out form" (only the minimum needed for warnings). This function prevents being followed by other aircraft in competition.
- Options
- Disabled / Enabled
- Recommended value
- Disabled (normal operation). Enabled only when specified by competition rules.
- Notes
- There are safety disadvantages. Surrounding aircraft cannot grasp your detailed movements, reducing situational awareness. On training flights and in crowded airspace, always leave it OFF.
- Meaning
- When ON, it sends a flag to ground receiving networks such as OGN requesting "please do not record or publish this aircraft."
- Options
- Disabled / Enabled
- Recommended value
- Disabled. If you want to use OGN live tracking or position tracking for search and rescue, always leave it OFF.
- Notes
- When ON, no ground track record remains, which is disadvantageous for search in the event of an accident. For club operation, keeping it OFF is generally recommended. Note that while on the ground, Stealth/No-Track aircraft are not shown on the Traffic Monitor.
2-5. Transponder/SSR & ADS-B Receiver
The PowerFLARM Flex has a built-in 1090 MHz receiver, so it can also detect aircraft carrying ADS-B transmitters or transponders (Mode-S/Mode-C). Here you determine how they are handled.
- Meaning
- Whether to issue collision warnings for aircraft transmitting ADS-B Out.
- Options
- Off / On
- Recommended value
- On. It is the only means to become aware of approaches by airliners and general aircraft.
- Notes
- In airspace with many ADS-B aircraft, warnings increase. Even so, it is safer to adjust with the range settings (below) than to turn it OFF.
- Meaning
- Whether to sound a tone for Mode-S aircraft whose direction is unknown (non-directional warnings).
- Options
- Off / On
- Recommended value
- On (in airspace with surrounding traffic). Off only if it sounds too frequently and becomes bothersome in a training area.
- Notes
- A Mode-S warning only tells you that "someone is nearby." Since the direction is not indicated, strengthen your all-around lookout when it sounds.
- Meaning
- Whether to also pick up responses from older Mode-C transponders and include them as warning targets.
- Options
- Off / On
- Recommended value
- On.
- Notes
- Mode-C is prone to false detection, so use it in combination with the Filtering Method below.
- Meaning
- How strongly to remove noise and duplicates from Mode-C responses.
- Options
- Aggressive (Default) (strong removal) / Less aggressive (weaker)

- Notes
- Less aggressive increases detections but also increases false warnings from non-existent aircraft (ghosts).
- Meaning
- Whether to use the barometric altitude reported by your own Mode-S transponder for altitude comparison with other aircraft. Since it can be compared against the same reference (1013 hPa), accuracy improves.
- Options
- No / Yes
- Recommended value
- For Mode-S aircraft, Yes. For aircraft without one, No.
- Notes
- This assumes your own transponder is responding correctly.
- Meaning
- The horizontal/vertical range for displaying and warning about ADS-B aircraft.
- Options
- Horizontal: Off / 1.5 NM-20 NM / Unlimited / Custom Vertical: 500 ft-10000 ft / Unlimited / Custom
- Recommended value
- Horizontal 10 NM / 19 km, vertical 7500 ft / 2300 m (default). Practical values suited to the operating altitude and speed of sailplanes.
- Notes
- Setting it to Unlimited without good reason picks up even airliners flying distant airways, filling up the display.
- Meaning
- The range within which Mode-S aircraft whose direction is unknown are treated as "in proximity."
- Options
- Horizontal: Off / 1-5 NM / Custom Vertical: 500 ft-10000 ft / Unlimited / Custom
- Recommended value
- Horizontal 3 NM / 6 km, vertical 7500 ft / 2300 m (default).
- Notes
- Mode-S distance estimation is based on signal strength and has large errors, so widening it produces too many warnings. Keeping the default value is recommended.
- Meaning
- A value used to correct the gain of the 1090 MHz receiving system (antenna, cable) numerically, so that the calculation estimating distance from signal strength is aligned.
- Options
- Numeric value (default
30) - Recommended value
- 30 (leave at the default value).
- Notes
- Do not change it unless instructed by an installer or the manufacturer. An incorrect value throws off the distance estimation for Mode-S warnings.
- Meaning
- Whether to notify external equipment of Mode-S warnings with unknown direction as
$PFLAUsentences. - Options
- Off / On
- Recommended value
- On (if you want non-directional warnings displayed on an external display).
- Notes
- Older external equipment cannot handle "warnings with unknown direction" correctly and may display them in the wrong direction. In that case, use Off.
- Meaning
- Whether to use traffic information rebroadcast by ground stations (TIS-B: radar-derived; ADS-R: relay of ADS-B on other frequencies).
- Options
- None / TIS-B / ADS-R / Both
- Recommended value
- Both (default).
- Notes
- These services are provided mainly in the United States (UAT). In Japan there are no applicable ground stations, so they have essentially no effect (leaving them enabled does no harm).
2-6. ADS-L
ADS-L is a lightweight position-broadcast standard whose adoption is progressing in Europe. On this unit, ADS-L license is not present. ADS-L transmission is disabled. is displayed, and transmission is disabled because the license has not been purchased. It is not needed in Japan at present. If you want to use it, add the license through your dealer.
2-7. IGC Recording Advanced
Sets the header information the built-in IGC logger writes to the log and the recording interval. If you are submitting for a competition or record flight, be sure to verify that this is correct before flight.
- Meaning
- How many seconds between position records.
- Options
- 1 to 8 seconds
- Recommended value
- For normal flight, 4 seconds (default). For competitions and record claims, follow the organizer/FAI rules with 1-2 seconds.
- Notes
- Shortening it makes files larger and, on long flights, strains the built-in memory. Download the logs regularly.
- Meaning
- The occupant names written to the IGC file header. Pilot name is linked with the item in 2-2.
- Options
- ASCII (Pilot 47 characters, Co-pilot the same)
- Recommended value
- The name of the person actually aboard, in Roman letters. For a single-seater, leave Co-pilot blank.
- Notes
- When conducting training flights in a two-seater, entering the rear seat (instructor) as Co-pilot is valid as record evidence.
- Meaning
- The aircraft information recorded in the IGC file header. Class is the competition class (Standard, 15m, 18m, Club, etc.).
- Options
- Registration 15 characters / Model 31 characters / Class 15 characters / CompID 15 characters (all ASCII)
- Recommended value
- Match exactly, character for character, the content of your competition entry.
- Notes
- If these are blank or wrong, the log may not be accepted in competition scoring.
2-8. Upload Configuration File
Drag and drop a FLARM configuration file (flarmcfg.txt format), or select it with "Browse" and press "Upload," to load the settings in bulk.
Chapter 3Configuration > WiFiConfiguration / WiFi
This is the settings screen for the Wi-Fi access point broadcast by the unit. There are two cards.
3-1. Wi-Fi Access Point
The top field is the SSID, and the bottom field is the password. Enter each one and press "Set SSID" and "Set password", then finally press "Restart" to apply the changes.

3-2. Wireless Auto Shut Off (Wi-Fi Auto Off)
This is a function that automatically turns off Wi-Fi when specified conditions are met. After it turns off, it becomes active again by restarting the unit or by landing (in the case of the in-flight condition).

Chapter 4Configuration > FLARM HubConfiguration / FLARM Hub
These are the settings for the WebGUI (FLARM Hub) itself.
4-1. Lock device (locking the settings)
Setting a password locks the settings against changes. Anyone can view them, but unlocking is required to make changes.
- The password is 8–63 ASCII characters. Make it different from the Wi-Fi password.
- To unlock, use "Unlock until restart". As the name suggests, it is valid until a restart, after which it is automatically re-locked. You can also re-lock it manually.
- If you want to remove the lock, use "Remove password protection".
4-2. Language Selection (display language)
You can choose from three languages: English / Deutsch / Français (Japanese is not available at this time). This document is written assuming the English display.
Chapter 5Maintenance > Software UpdateMaintenance / Software Update
Update the main unit software (PowerFLARM Flex firmware) and the web interface (FLARM Hub). This is the most important maintenance task in daily operation.
5-1. Why Updates Are Necessary
Because all FLARM units communicate using the same radio protocol, the software has an expiration date. A unit past its expiration date cannot maintain compatibility with other units, so it stops transmitting and receiving. In other words, if you neglect updates, one day your FLARM will suddenly stop functioning. Check the Expiration Date on the Status screen regularly.
5-2. Update Procedure
- On a PC, download the latest software from the relevant product page at flarm.com (the main unit uses
.fw, and FLARM Hub uses.bin). - Stabilize the power on the aircraft side (a power loss during the update can cause a failure; connect external power if possible).
- Open Software Update in the WebGUI, and drag & drop the file into the appropriate box, or select it with "Browse".
- Press "Upload". The progress advances from 0% → 100%, showing "In progress".
- Once complete, the main unit restarts automatically. Since Wi-Fi disconnects, reconnect and check the new version and expiration date on the Status screen.
Chapter 6Maintenance > Obstacle DatabaseMaintenance / Obstacle Database
This is the screen for installing the obstacle database (.ob2 file) for power lines, antenna towers, cableways, and the like. Once installed, FLARM can issue proximity warnings for obstacles.
- The installation status is displayed at the top of the screen (this unit shows
No database installed.). - The procedure is the same as a software update: drag & drop the
.ob2file, then click "Upload". - The database has an expiration date and a license. It is distributed by region, and purchases/downloads are made from flarm.com.
Chapter 7Maintenance > IGC FilesMaintenance / IGC Files
This is the screen for listing and downloading the flight records (IGC files) recorded by the built-in logger. It is one of the screens you use most in daily operation.
7-1. Procedure for retrieving logs
- Press "Load list of files" (or "Refresh list of files" if already loaded). Since the file list is read from the unit, this takes a few to several tens of seconds.
- Click the file name of the target flight in the list, and that file will be downloaded.
- If you want to retrieve everything at once, use "Download all files". They are downloaded together as a ZIP, and progress is shown as "Downloading: x%".
7-2. How to read the list

Chapter 8Tools > Traffic MonitorTools / Traffic Monitor
This screen displays FLARM and ADS-B aircraft currently being received in a radar-like view. It is strictly for operational checks and troubleshooting and cannot be used for collision avoidance.
8-1. How to Read the Display

Chapter 9Tools > Data PortTools / Data Port
This is a terminal that lets you view the NMEA sentences flowing through the data port directly on screen. Use it to check settings or troubleshoot external devices.
9-1. Operation

This is an analysis screen showing how far away aircraft you are actually able to communicate with, based on CARP (Continuous Antenna Range Performance). It amounts to a health check of your antenna installation quality.
10-1. How to read it
- The circle represents bearing (straight up is north), and the concentric circles represent distance (in the figure, 3 km / 7 km / 10 km).
- The filled area is the distance over which you are actually able to communicate in that bearing. Red (Poor range) = insufficient performance.
- If only a particular bearing is extremely dented, it is highly likely that there is an antenna obstruction (canopy frame, carbon structure, equipment shadow) in that direction.
- At the bottom there is the processing date/time and "Print report," which lets you print the report or save it as a PDF.
10-2. Reset CARP
This erases the accumulated measurement data and restarts the analysis from scratch. Three occasions when you should press it are officially indicated.
- When you newly install the equipment
- When you replace the PowerFLARM Flex
- At annual maintenance (before doing so, save the previous year's record with "Print report")
Chapter 11Tools > SimulatorTools / Simulator
This is a function for generating simulated traffic and alerts to verify on the ground whether the connected display and speaker sound correctly.

Chapter 12Tools > IGC Task DeclarationTools / IGC Task Declaration
This is the screen for writing a task declaration for competition and record flights to the logger. The declaration is recorded in the IGC file and serves as evidence of the flight.
12-1. Creating by Manual Entry
- If you also want to declare the take-off and landing points, check "Declare take-off and landing?".
- Enter a task name (ASCII, up to 50 characters) in "New task name" and click "Create new task".
- Add waypoints one by one. For each point, enter the Name (up to 50 characters), Lat, and Lon.
- Once everything is entered, press "Restart device and activate task". The declaration only becomes valid after the device restarts.
12-2. How to Write Coordinates (Important)
Coordinates must be entered in WGS84 DMM format (degrees and decimal minutes), packed together without any symbols.

Drag and drop a declaration file onto "Upload IGC Task Declaration" below, then click "Upload" → "Restart device to activate upload" to apply it. This is the reliable method for importing a task created in SeeYou or similar software.
Chapter 13Tools > SupportTools / Support
This is the screen used for investigating and recovering from problems when they occur. It contains functions that you should not touch during normal operation.
13-1. Support Package
This is a function that bundles the settings and debug information into a ZIP file. Use it when requested by your dealer or the manufacturer. If you check "Include flash dump," a detailed memory dump is also included, but this can take up to one hour. The device cannot be used while it is being created.
13-2. Restart FLARM Hub
This restarts only the Web screen (Hub) side. It is the first operation to try when you experience symptoms such as the screen freezing, being unable to connect, or the display not updating. Transmission and reception by the FLARM unit itself continues.
13-3. Factory Reset Device
